Red States vs. Blue States: A New Theory?

Unusual theory demonstrates that sales of RAZR cell phones can predict election outcomes. Results of research done by MPhone, when mapped out, look remarkably similar to 'results by state' maps of presidential elections.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 5, 2007 - After six months of research, a chance graph report suggested the theory that cell phone purchasing behaviors might predict voting habits. With data collected from leading online wireless stores, the researcher for new online cell phone store MPhone, was tracking cell phone purchasing by state, and created a color-coded graph to compare regional statistics on sales of Black Razr phones vs. sales of Pink Razr phones.

The graph, in the shape of a map of the United States, with the states colored blue for more Black Razr sales, and red for more Pink Razr sales, looked astonishingly like the maps used to illustrate Democrat-Republican voting trends, leading researchers to believe that there may be truth to this theory. If the theory is correct, it illustrates a strong Republican voting trend, with Pink Razr's dominating the majority of the states, 38 to 12.

Really the whole thing happened by chance

One of our researchers used the graph in a report, and right away people made this reference. Then we just started to think, wouldn't it be interesting if we did come up with a genuine trend? We decided to explore this.

It's only when you compare the maps, state by state, that you can see the differences. In particular, New York and California are red on our maps, yet both traditionally vote Democrat. Texas, on the other hand, is blue on our map, while it is known as a Republican-voting state.

At first glance, the Black Razr vs. Pink Razr map looks remarkably similar to the 2000 and 2004 U.S. presidential election maps, with Red (Republican) being the dominant color by far, and small blocks of Blue (Democrat) states somewhat on the periphery. Upon closer scrutiny, however, it seems that the states that voted Democrat, while similar in quantity to the states that purchased more Black Razr phones, actually only have a few that overlap. "When you look quickly at the cell phone map, you don't even realize they're different," adds Novick. "It's only when you compare the maps, state by state, that you can see the differences. In particular, New York and California are red on our maps, yet both traditionally vote Democrat. Texas, on the other hand, is blue on our map, while it is known as a Republican-voting state." While no conclusions can be drawn as of yet, the research continues.
