Lorraine Land and Ross DePinto, both PhD students of the online university, will present at the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's annual conference in New York City April 27-29.

Two students from Capella University, an accredited, fully online university, have been invited to present at the 2007 Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's (SIOP) annual conference being held in New York City April 27-29. Lorraine A. Land, a PhD learner in the Harold Abel School of Psychology, and Ross DePinto, a PhD learner in the School of Business and Technology, will present a poster session titled, "Sources of Occupational Role Stress Experienced by Psychologists."

Land and DePinto met in Phoenix in the summer of 2006 while attending one of Capella's residential colloquia. Land told DePinto about a study she had conducted examining the isolation, perceived organizational support (POS), and occupational stress of psychologists, and DePinto offered to help her analyze the data. After many long distance consults, they finished the study and submitted it for presentation at the 2007 SIOP conference.

Although Capella's courses are offered online, graduate students and some master's students, meet for intensive residential sessions called colloquia, which is Latin for 'conversation.'

"My meeting Ross DePinto exemplifies how fruitful contacts and connections made at Capella's colloquia can be," Land said. "If I hadn't met Ross at colloquium, we may not have had the chance to participate in such a wonderful opportunity."

Land is a high school counselor in the Philadelphia school district and a licensed professional counselor in the state of Pennsylvania. She also does various consulting work with mental health agencies in Philadelphia.

DePinto is an executive for the Welk Group in San Diego and does consulting work involving coaching and leadership skills.
