New ELI® White Paper Identifies Steps to Creating a Values-Based Workplace

While legal compliance is compulsory and important, many of today’s workplace problems stem from subtle, not necessarily illegal conduct. ELI’s latest white paper shows why and how organizations should integrate values into the culture, driving behavior change with a values-based, rather than compliance-focused, approach.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 1, 2007 -- ELI announces the release of a new white paper, “The End of Law, the Rise of Values,” addressing the steps organizations need to take in building a values-based culture. While most organizations have values in place, the paper notes that companies generally have failed to integrate them into the workplace culture, focusing instead on meeting compliance requirements. However, with a rise in subtle but not necessarily illegal conduct hindering teamwork and the business mission, values will become an increasingly important driver of behavior change.

“I’ve seen many companies become distracted by the requirements and complexities of mandatory training laws,” says the paper’s author, ELI president Stephen M. Paskoff, Esq. “The laws are well-intended, but organizations can get so caught up in legal nuances they overlook the fact that if everyone behaved according to the values, the legal standards would be met if not exceeded.”

From harassment to bullying to humiliation, a wide range of behaviors are damaging the workplace. Using examples from a variety of industries, the paper outlines the elements necessary for integrating values into the culture, highlighting potential obstacles that can interfere with reaching the goal. Some of the barriers discussed include: complex, often disjointed structures and training initiatives established in reaction to internal issues or high-profile scandals; confusing, conflicting, and unclear messages about values; the distraction of focus caused by myriad legal mandates; and a failure to give managers the skills they need to affect behavior in their business units.

“Managers are the primary influencers in the day-to-day business environment,” Paskoff notes. “But we’re inundating them with legal and compliance-related information rather than developing their skills. Equipping them with skills in addition to knowledge will give them the confidence and ability to take more control over the behaviors and conditions in their work environment.”

The paper discusses specific competencies managers need to become values-based leaders, including serving as role models, understanding and communicating the business benefits of operating by the values, knowing when and how to take action if violations occur, and being able to welcome and respond appropriately to employee concerns.

“The End of Law, the Rise of Values” is available for download from ELI’s website, along with other opinion papers in the ELI Insights and Trends series.
