Park West Gallery Artist Biography series invites the public to experience the serenity of Emile Bellet. This self-taught artist uses only a palette knife to create an expressive, peaceful quality that evokes an unparalleled level of femininity and elegance.

Born in Provence, France in 1941, Bellet began painting when he was fifteen years old and in 1960 held his first exhibition at the young age of nineteen. His career began in 1976, with recognition from the prestigious Galerie Guigne in Paris, and in 1978 he completed the stained glass windows of the church "Notre Dame de Bon Voyage," in Port de Bouc. Bellet's exhibits have been numerous in countries including France, Switzerland, Senegal and Japan with permanent collections in various cities in France.

Bellet revels in imposing restrictions on his palette to extract subtle nuances from limited colors and minimal elements. Having mastered the discipline of utilizing an impasto knife to create his vivid colors, Bellet explains, "I was bothered by the lines left by brushstrokes… The advantage of the knife is that you can put down a lot of color, you can have it be very smooth or you can crush it down on top of other colors and then play with it…One color calls another color..."

The elongated female forms throughout Bellet's works have no defined facial expression but rather are symbolic of all women. They are clothed in long dresses to accentuate the contours of their bodies and are timeless, ageless, universal.

In a recent article, Patrice de la Perrier, Director of the Art publication, Univers des Arts, described Bellet's work as follows:

"The ethereal, red women of Bellet magnificently reveal themselves in the fragrance of summer light. Whether they are standing near a window opening onto a romantic countryside, or sitting languorously in a comfortable interior, Bellet's women never cease to draw you into a dreamlike world. Their presence, brings an undeniable and sincere emotion to the viewer."

As the exclusive publisher of Bellet lithographs, serigraphs and giclees, Park West Gallery is pleased to present this extraordinary talent whose favored themes of beauty, nature, music and femininity have attracted legions of collectors from all over the world.
