In Miniature
"In Miniature" features the works of Marcy Milks from her newest series entitled "Dumb." The exhibition contains both her diminutive figurative sculptures and her tiny paintings of figures. Ms. Milks speaks of these tiny creations saying, "The tiny, androgynous figures that I create have limited features and gestures. The subtle, varying shades of color are the only source of detail for these unadorned entities. These seemingly insignificant figures are immersed in white voids turning the common threads of human interaction into images of reflection. In each motionless moment, generic figures are asked to live in their own space while relating to others. They show relationships, suggest stories that are both blatant and ambiguous with meaning and reflect feelings only felt in intellectual ways.
Reminiscent of children, the miniature people seem occasionally naive and partially unaware though willing to wallow before committing to action." More recently the figures have evolved into figures which have superhuman features or animal parts. Ms. Milks sees this as her depiction of individuals striving to experience life at higher levels and so trying to acquire better traits as the expense of human senses.
"In Miniature" at Ch'i marks Ms. Milks first solo exhibition with the gallery. She has previously been included in their 2005 group show, "around the figure". Additionally she has exhibited in group exhibitions around New York and in Phoenix, Arizona. She has her masters of painting from Pratt Institute and her undergraduate work was completed at the University of New York, Buffalo. Ms. Milks will be on hand to speak with individuals about her work at a public reception on March 16th from 6-9 p.m. at Ch'i - 293 Grand St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her exhibition will run at the gallery from March 14- April 14th, 2007.
Eye Candy
The second March exhibition at Ch'i entitled "Eye Candy" features the figurative paintings of another Brooklyn artist, Carri Skoczek. As with her past series, this group of paintings portray women from Pulp fiction and 30's or 40's glamour girls. The works are created with heavy emphasis on "attitude" and give a nod to Ms. Skoczek's hero, Egon Schiele. This newest series features "bathing beauties" in their lingerie and debutantes in their evening attire.
Carri says of her work, "My work has always been about portraiture. I am fascinated by personality and human behavior. I strive to capture the essence of a person through psychological insight and portrayal of mood exposing their complexities and vulnerabilities. I am interested in expressing the vast array of human emotion and attitude through body language and facial expression, especially the eyes, the window to the soul. My work is a reflection of the world around me, a world of fashionistas, posturing wannabes, empowered bimbos, drunk girls, lonely men and aging hipsters."
Carri Skoczek is a painter, printmaker, sculptor and costume designer. She has exhibited her artwork for 23 years in NYC, Milwaukee, WI, Chicago, Santa Fe, Denver, Jamaica, Germany and Greece. She has also exhibited at the Museum of Natural History, NYC; the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, LA and the Haggerty Museum, Milwaukee, WI. Additionally, she received a Wisconsin Arts Board painting fellowship in 1986 and a WAB project grant for her "Martini Tropics" exhibition in 1989. She has curated numerous exhibits including the annual Mermaid Show in celebration of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, of which she is a three time award winner for her costume designs. She was the resident designer for the world renowned Theater X in Milwaukee for 12 years. Also designing for Wild Space Dance Co. as well as numerous performance artists. Her work has been reviewed in publications across the country. She was featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" for her exhibition "Offering " at Holland Tunnel Gallery in Brooklyn 2001. She studied drawing and printmaking at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and graduated from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver. The "Eye Candy" exhibition will mark her first solo exhibition with Ch'i though she has appeared in several group shows and at Bridge Miami with the gallery. The exhibition runs from March 14 - April 14, 2007 and the public is invited to an artist's reception on March 16th from 6 - 9 p.m.
