Eighty-Year-Old Woman Columnist Told It Like It Was -- Newspaper Woman's Weekly Columns Described Life and Events of the Early Twentieth Century

In the early 1900's Pearl Playford began a newspaper career lasting over 50 years. At age 80 she began the column Reminiscing With Pearl Playford for The Watervliet Record, writing of SW Michigan, Watervliet, Coloma, Paw Paw Lake, and world events.

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) March 13, 2007 -- In the early 1900's newspaper woman Pearl Playford embarked on a career that would continue for over fifty years. When nearly 80 years of age she began a weekly newspaper column, Reminiscing With Pearl Playford, for The Watervliet Record.

Pearl wrote not only of Southwestern Michigan history and local issues of the Watervliet, Coloma, and Paw Paw Lake area, but on a wide variety of topics. These included national politics, world history, women's rights, prohibition, holidays, religion and even the weather. Miss Playford quoted old records and other sources extensively, especially newspaper and magazine articles she had clipped and saved in scrapbooks over the decades.

"When I first began work for The Record conditions were far different from now. The office didn't have a typewriter and all copy was written long hand, and I do not remember that there was a telephone. We went every morning to get a pail of water at the town pump..."

All of Pearl's Reminiscing columns have been compiled into a new book, Reminiscing With Pearl Playford, Columns From The Watervliet Record 1959-1966, by Richard Russell and published by Reminiscing Books of Asheville, North Carolina. Over 300 pages filled with names, places, anecdotes, little known facts, as well as a comprehensive index.
