James Kinney, a financial planning professional and founder of Bridgewater-based Financial Pathways, LLC, has earned the Certified College Planning Specialist (CCPS) designation from the National Institute of Certified College Planners. There are fewer than 500 Certified College Planning Specialists in the country.

"Financial planners and investment advisers that have made the investment in time, education, and training to become genuine experts in college planning deserve special recognition," says Rick Darvis CPA, principal of College Funding Inc. and one of the nation's preeminent experts on planning for college. "The CCPS designation helps to distinguish those professionals that have made that commitment."

According to Mr. Kinney, "Aside from a personal residence, college tuition is the largest purchase most people will make in their lifetimes. It is also by far the most complex. Financial aid rules and qualifications, related forms and applications, tax laws, credits and deductions often leave the consumer feeling overwhelmed. I sought out the CCPS training program so I would be better prepared to help my clients through the complicated process of saving for, and paying for, college tuition and expenses."

Mr. Kinney, a resident of Hillsborough, New Jersey, offers several important pieces of advice to parents. "First, start saving early. Saving even a small amount each month for 18 years can make a significant contribution to your children's needs. Second, don't neglect your retirement needs. There are loans and aid available for college expenses, but there is no financial aid program for your retirement. What parents need to do is strike a healthy balance between their own needs and the needs of their children," he explains.

The National Institute of Certified College Planners (http://www.niccp.com) restricts the CCPS designation to registered investment advisers, licensed securities agents, CPAs, attorneys, and other higher education professionals that assist families in preparing for the financial cost of sending children to college. The organization provides educational resources and support to CCPS candidates and designees, including training and testing in the areas of paying for college, saving for college, and advanced college funding strategies.
