Shawn Smith was at the end of his rope - literally. After years of self-destructive behaviors, addictions, and depression -- the 35 year old corrections officer had made the decision to take his own life.
The dramatic moments that follow shaped the course of Smith's life, and provide the backdrop for his compelling new book, Find Happiness! How to Fill the Void in Your Life by Looking, Feeling, and Living Better. A combination autobiography and self-help book, Find Happiness! details how a series of life events drove Smith deep into the depths of depression and to brink of suicide - and how he found his way back -- ultimately discovering the peace and happiness he had been searching for all of his life.
Unwavering in his account, Smith takes readers on an emotional journey as he relates the details of that fateful day. "I was completely out of touch with reality at that point. I felt that the quality of my life was gone, and all I wanted to do was die," Smith explains. "I had run the rope to the second floor, wrapped it around the washer and dryer, through the banister, and to the foyer below. I climbed to the top of a stepladder, wrapped the rope around my neck, and prepared to jump off."
Smith hopes that his riveting story can serve to illustrate the miraculous ways that God works in the lives of ordinary people. Individuals plagued by feelings of anxiety, depression, or dependency will immediately relate to the struggles of Smith's past -- and will be encouraged by his personal transformation. In a voice tempered by experience, Smith offers readers the tools to help them identify destructive behaviors in their own lives, and the motivation to help them overcome these obstacles. Christians and non-believers alike will agree that Find Happiness! can be used as a tool for self-discovery - resulting in improved relationships, inner contentment, and a closer relationship with God.
"Understand that happiness is a choice," says Smith. "We must choose to let go of our attempts to control people, relationships, and situations, thereby freeing ourselves from their control. We can choose to let go of our vengeance and resentment when others do not fulfill our expectations. We can choose to live our own lives and work on our growth. Happiness is not having everyone and everything go our way. It grows out of a quiet choice to accept the things we cannot control and to concentrate on changing what we can--ourselves."
