AthenaOnline, a leading provider of on-demand knowledge, announced today that they will be offering portions of their leadership library (SmartBytes) for use on video iPods and cellular phones. Athena has been delivering the lessons as MP3 files for almost a year, but this will be the first time the library has been delivered to iPods and cell phones as videos.

According to analysts Apple shipped almost 40 million iPods in 2006, and it is expected that the number will reach 45 million for calendar year 2007. According to Nielson Media Research approximately 30% of the iPods sold are video enabled.

The market for videos on cell phones is still in its infancy however, with only about 2.3% of current cell phone users watching video on their phones (according to research firm Telephia). However, as consumers upgrade their phones and carriers upgrade their networks some analysts anticipate that the market will grow to over 25 million users by 2009.

"Our three to six minute video lessons are the perfect format for these tools," says Athena CEO Jon Peters. "We have always been dedicated to delivering knowledge when and where people need it most and this is just one of the ways we plan to deliver on the promise."

Athena has worked with over 60 business consultants and experts like Drs. Marshall Goldsmith, Russell Ackoff, Judith Bardwick, Vijay Govindarajan, and many others to create a library of almost 1,000 SmartByte videos on leadership. The videos are currently delivered through customized learning portals for organizations like The US Air Force, TAP Pharmaceuticals, and the Province of Ontario. In addition, Athena offers almost 1,000 SmartBytes on strategic governance, created with The Value Alliance, and 200 on diversity, created with Innovations International.

"AthenaOnline is fundamentally changing the tipping point for learning, bringing knowledge to the individual when they want it and not just when it is available,” says Mr. Pete Peterson, former Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Hewlett-Packard. “These new delivery formats are a huge step in the direction of anywhere, anytime learning that caters to the learner’s needs and constraints.”

Current AthenaOnline customers have already begun to receive the new iPod videos, with the cellular service becoming available in May. Athena will be making some of the iPod and cellular videos available to non-subscribers as well through their website at http://www.athenaonline.com.
