Da Vinci Goes to the Dogs -- Artist Ron Burns Unveils Canine Version of Da Vinci's "The Last Supper"
Pop Artist Ron Burns unveils a new large-scale painting called "Dinner and Drinks with the Son of Dog," that riffs on Leonardo Da Vinci masterpiece.
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) March 21, 2007 -- One gallery owner in a "Bible Belt" state has already refused to carry Ron Burns' latest work portraying a gathering of pooches around a well-known supper table.
"Maybe the world isn't ready for this. Truth is, I wasn't trying to be controversial with this one," says Ron Burns. "I love Da Vinci, I love dogs and it seemed like a fun idea to bring the two together."
The result of this historic matchmaking enterprise? Burns Studio Publishing is pleased to announce the release of limited editions of "Dinner and Drinks with the Son of Dog," Burns' riff on Leonardo da Vinci's, "The Last Supper", which was also a central image in the book "The Da Vinci Code" by novelist Dan Brown.
The Burns version features his own beloved mutt, Rufus, in the center seat, a doggy bone with a halo-like glow floating behind his head. The table is set with tennis balls, dog food in bowls, chew toys and mixed drinks.
The original acrylic on canvas painting measures 36" x 72" and is being unveiled at Vessley Fine Art Gallery in Scottsdale, Ariz., during a gallery opening on Thursday, March 22, called "The Dog Vinci Code." The original painting comes with a price tag of $65,000.
Burns Studio Publishing produced 95 limited edition giclees on stretched canvas, 18" x 36" for $1,550 each and 195 limited edition giclees on archival paper, 15" x 30" for $650. The limited editions are hand-signed and numbered by Ron Burns.

"Dinner and Drinks" represents the fourth time Burns has produced a piece inspired by another artist. An early piece titled "Roy Speaks" is based on his admiration for the artist Roy Lichtenstein, and Burns' "Henri and the Goldfish" is based on his love of Matisse. In 2006 he produced "Kong Juice and Cards," his version of the C.M. Coolidge painting of dogs playing poker.
Burns is artist in residence for the Humane Society of the United States and has a long-term commitment to improving the lives of animals, such as shelter dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Besides producing original works and private commission projects, Burns has helped raise millions of dollars to benefit animal-related charities. Within the past year he has painted the portraits of dogs owned by celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor, Doc Severinsen, and Joan Rivers as a means of raising funds and awareness of the needs of animals.
His work has been featured on CNN, FOX news, PBS, Forbes magazine, and ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."
