Virgin Comics has announced an agreement with uclick, a leader in mobile entertainment, to distribute comic books and other products featuring Virgin Comics characters on mobile phones throughout North America, UK, Australia and South Africa.
Virgin Comics has tapped into India's long history of storytelling and art to create its line of original comic book properties called "Shakti." "Shakti," meaning "power" in Sanskrit, is Indian-style storytelling featuring sweeping epics that cover large-scale time and space, characterized by themes of prophecy and destiny.
The result is Virgin's line of action-packed, thematically rich tales that appeal to readers across cultural bounds now being sold at book stores and comic shops across the US, UK, Canada, Europe and Asia - a perfect match for the dynamic platform and expansive distribution offered by uclick.
"We were truly impressed with uclick's GoComics Mobile Comics Reader - the first of its kind in the U.S. We're especially excited to make our mobile comics available to Virgin Mobile customers plus all of the major carriers, including Cingular, Verizon and Sprint that feature the GoComics Reader," said Larry Lieberman, Chief Marketing Officer of Virgin Comics. "Its widespread availability enables us to capture a larger demographic by extending our reach to audiences around the world.
"Virgin Comics is all about developing characters and stories that can easily make the jump from one form of media to another - that exist as well in comics as they grow to other media. Mobile comic book distribution through uclick is a natural next step for these versatile properties," Larry continued.
The Virgin Comics titles that will make their way to mobile phones this summer include the brightest stars of the line:
- Ramayan 3392 A.D. - A futuristic rendition of one of India's greatest epics
- The Sadhu - The wise, ageless mystic warriors of India are reborn
- Devi - A powerful goddess is reincarnated as a young super heroine
- Snake Woman - A super-sexy horror thriller inspired by Indian legend
"Virgin Comics and the Shakti style are the next wave in Asian storytelling," said Jeff Webber, uclick's Director of Mobile Product Development. "We're excited to partner with such an innovative and forward-thinking publisher for this new mobile product line. The GoComics Mobile Comics Reader will help put Virgin Comics at the leading edge of comics distribution, to the delight of fans all over the world."
Virgin Comics joins uclick's growing list of mobile publishing partners - a list that includes TOKYOPOP, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and many more. uclick also offers a collection of mobile cartoons through GoComics TV, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Yu-Gi-Oh!.
