Richmond, KY (PRWEB) March 27, 2007
Beginning this fall, Eastern Kentucky University will deliver its expertise in fire and safety education to students around the country by offering its Bachelor of Science in Fire & Safety Engineering Technology completely online. The program is one of only a handful of bachelor degrees with a focus on fire protection administration offered in the United States, and it is backed by one of the most distinguished faculty in the world. Online classes toward the degree will begin August 20, 2007.
In addition to the Bachelor's degree, Eastern Kentucky will be offering an online Fire & Safety Engineering Technology Certificate option for fire safety professionals who do not wish to enter the full degree program. The Fire & Safety Engineering Technology Certificate is comprised of core courses focusing on fire protection administration offered by Eastern Kentucky and will also be available this fall.
Students will study disaster preparedness, emergency scene operations, fire behavior and combustion, hazardous materials, and arson investigation, among other topics. They will also be able to apply their on-the-job knowledge in practicum and cooperative learning situations.
Eastern Kentucky's fire protection administration curriculum is delivered by the university's department of Loss Prevention & Safety. A total of 128 credits are required to earn the Bachelor's degree.
"Since the Fire & Safety Engineering Technology Program was established in 1975, Eastern Kentucky University has been a leader in the field," said Dr. Larry Collins, chair Department of Loss Prevention & Safety. "Eastern Kentucky was one of the first universities to offer a bachelor's degree in Fire & Safety Engineering Technology on-campus, and now the need arises to supply quality distance education to the growing emergency management industry. Eastern Kentucky's expert faculty, internationally known for their teaching, research and dedication to the fire and safety fields will now be available to students worldwide."
The new online Bachelor's in Fire & Safety Engineering Technology can be completed in as little as 24 months. The program is a dynamic, multidimensional distance learning program, using a learner-centric approach designed to accommodate different learning styles and schedules of working professionals in the fire and safety industry.
The online program offers flexibility which is essential to fire and safety professionals who do not adhere to traditional schedules, often working 24 hour shifts with multiple days off between shifts. Many also have second jobs in other professions. The career options after attaining the Bachelor's degree include management positions within fire departments and corporate fire and safety positions in the civilian world. The degree is also an excellent option for fire fighters looking for another career after retirement.
One of the strengths of the program is in the faculty, world renowned experts in fire and safety who are very involved in the field. Several faculty members were involved in founding the National Association of Fire Investigators and are active in numerous professional organizations including: National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Arson Investigators, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
