The only word for it really is blockbuster. It is big and breathtaking; the story and the concepts are ambitious to the point of mind boggling.
Adelaide, South Australia (PRWEB) March 26, 2007
The CGSociety (The Society of Digital Artists), a division of Ballistic Media, announced the winners of its 20th CGChallenge. The Challenges are the world's most successful and rewarded series of computer graphics competitions. The CGSociety runs three CGChallenges per year attracting thousands of entrants. The 20th CGChallenge was based on best-selling science fiction author Greg Bear's book EON.
Prizes were awarded in Film Trailer, 3D Scene and Illustration categories.
Previous CGChallenges have been based on themes and materials generated within The CGSociety. Breaking this tradition, the 20th CGChallenge was based on Greg Bear's blockbuster science fiction novel, EON. Greg Bear is one of the world's leading science fiction authors with an award-winning body of work spanning more than 30 books. Not content with one megastar writer, The CGSociety also invited David Brin to join the judging panel, and in another bold move expanded the categories of the Challenge. Previous Challenges were divided into 2D and 3D illustration categories. With the 20th CGChallenge, these Illustration categories were combined, and Film Trailer and 3D Scene categories were added. Team entries were also allowed for the first time.
Mark Snoswell, President of The CGSociety, said: "We wanted to lift the CGChallenges to a new level. What better way than using one of the world's most epic science fiction books and involving the author! This was also the right time to open up the Challenges to team entries and introduce the Film Trailer category. In the past we have seen some truly amazing talent and illustrations worthy of 'master artist' status. Now it was time to see whether there were any aspiring Scorsese's, Lucas' or Spielberg's lurking out there. To our great delight there are!"
Originally published in 1985, EON stands as one of the great science fiction novels of our time and remains one of Greg Bear's best selling titles. Entrants were allowed to create their work based on any part of EON. Greg kindly gave The CGSociety permission to publish a significant number of excerpts from the book to assist entrants not familiar with EON. "EON may be the best constructed hard SF epic yet." -- The Washington Post. "The only word for it really is blockbuster. It is big and breathtaking; the story and the concepts are ambitious to the point of mind boggling." -- Isaac Asimov's SF Magazine
The CGChallenges are "work in progress" competitions with entrants required to show work at a number of stages. The competitions are hosted within The CGSociety online community and attract a lot of attention and feedback from the world's digital arts community. Both entrants and community members benefit greatly from this open environment.
