Discovery Survey Finds Global Warming the Most Pressing Need

Western Australians believe discoveries to help solve global warming and climate change are the most urgently needed.

(PRWEB) March 29, 2007 -- Western Australians believe discoveries to help solve global and climate change are the most urgently needed.

An exclusive survey commissioned by Murdoch University asked people to nominate and rank those issues or world problems for which a solution most needs to be discovered with the following result:

1. Global warming
2. Water crisis
3. Cure for cancer
4. Poverty
5. Terrorism
6. Cure for HIV/AIDS

Other issues raised by survey participants as requiring a solution were war and peace, trust and respect for others.

Murdoch University Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Yovich said the results clearly showed the significant level of concern in the community about environmental issues.

"There is enormous concern around the world about global warming - and here in Australia, in the midst of the drought, that is closely matched by the need to solve the water crisis," Professor Yovich said.

"The Discoverers Welcome survey indicates that the community will most support research on these areas of concern - recognising that many of these problems are multi-faceted and extremely complex.

"That is why Murdoch is proud to be among Australia's top ranked research universities - and why we are actively pursuing research solutions to almost all of the problems highlighted in the survey."

Professor Yovich said a good example was Murdoch University's Professor Tom Lyons who has made a breakthrough in highlighting the connection between native bushland and the development of rain clouds.

"Another is the world-leading research into HIV-AIDS being led by Professor Simon Mallal," he said.

"Murdoch University is at the forefront of research on virtually all of the key areas nominated by the research participants, which is pleasing - and indicates that our research investment is being targeted appropriately."

Discovering ways to make the world a better place is what drives Murdoch University's world-class researchers. Find out more about some of the amazing projects we are working on today - visit our site at http://www.discover.murdoch.edu.au.
