With higher levels of education required for entry level positions and promotions, and with employers increasingly willing to accept and value degrees earned from online colleges and universities, more students than ever before are enrolling in online degree programs.
But watch out, some universities, and even some of the organizations that accredit them, are bogus.
And of the legitimate online colleges and universities, there are so many choices.
Since location isn't a factor, how should prospective students select an online college or online university?
"Our goal is not only to help students avoid the degree mills but to save them time by giving them a list of what we believe are the 20 best online colleges and universities," says Steve Swanson, an education expert who created the web site Online-Colleges-and-Degrees.com.
Swanson and his team of researchers evaluated more than 200 online colleges and online universities to come up with a 'Top 20' list.
They looked at overall academic quality, breadth of online degrees offered and the availability of academic and other student support services.
They also examined other factors like willingness to consider life experience and/or military credit (DANTES), accelerated degree options, overall cost, scholarship availability, tuition installment and financial aid options, institutional stability, and overall reputation.
All 20 online colleges and universities are accredited by agencies recognized by the United States Department of Education.
The Top 20 Online Colleges and Online Universities:
- All offer financial aid to qualified students
- Many offer scholarships and/or tuition installment plans.
- Many offer accelerated degrees, credit for life experience, and/or credit by examination.
"Although we're confident our web site can help, in the end, only students can decide which online degrees can best meet their individual needs," says Swanson.
He says his free web site is a first step to narrowing down the options.
"Students will be pleasantly surprised by how quickly they can earn a fully accredited degree online, by the variety of online degree programs available, and the affordability of online education" says Swanson.
