Healthy Living Academies has demonstrated unprecedented outcomes at its other programs, and we expect the same results at Wellspring Texas to benefit Texas children and their families.
San Marcos, TX (PRWEB) April 2, 2007
Texas families struggling with overweight children will be able to access world-class treatment close to home starting this summer. Healthy Living Academies today announced the establishment of Wellspring Texas, the first summer weight loss camp in Texas. Healthy Living Academies is the leading organization of treatment programs for overweight and obese youth, with two boarding schools and seven summer camps. Each year, Healthy Living Academies programs help thousands of young people return to a healthy weight.
Due to changes in diet and activity patterns, millions of Texas families are struggling with overweight or obese children and teens. Texas rates for childhood obesity are among the country's highest. In 2004, between 36-42% of school-age children in Texas were overweight or obese.
According to Healthy Living Academies clinical director Dr. Daniel S. Kirschenbaum, a professor at Northwestern University Medical School, there are several key factors that differentiate Healthy Living's approach to weight loss from that of most weight loss camps. "Wellspring Camps focus not just on weight loss through diet and activity management, but also address the psychological and emotional issues that often prevent successful weight loss by sustaining problematic eating and inactivity. Through a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, an introduction to healthy eating habits, and daily activities, campers at Wellspring Texas can expect to lose four to five pounds per week while enrolled, and continue to lose weight after returning home and over the next year."
Wellspring Texas is located on the campus of San Marcos Baptist Academy. Located in San Marcos, San Marcos Baptist Academy was founded in 1907 and is regarded as one of the leading schools in the Southern United States. "We're very excited to partner with the leading organization of weight loss programs for children to establish the first summer weight loss camp in Texas," said Vic Schmidt, president of San Marcos Baptist Academy. "Healthy Living Academies has demonstrated unprecedented outcomes at its other programs, and we expect the same results at Wellspring Texas to benefit Texas children and their families."
Wellspring Texas campers can expect a wide variety of exciting and rewarding activities this summer, including most team sports, swimming and personal training, aerobics and fitness activities. According to Wellspring Texas program director, Ondrej Jurik, campers will also take advantage of the many nearby natural attractions. "Wellspring Texas campers will enjoy tubing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and hiking in the Hill Country," said Ondrej. "Campers will also receive Wellspring's renowned nutrition and culinary training so they'll be able to continue weight loss at home."
