Honeymooner's Review Guide recently visited 5 destination wedding sites seeking candidates for its new "Choice Awards" program which is earned only by the best of hotels and resorts. Three resorts on Kauai's South shore were visited, and two on the North Shore around Hanalei. Here is what Honeymooner's Review Guide staff found with a short description of what these five have to offer as Destination Wedding resorts in the order in which they were visited.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Spa and Resort - Hawaiian Oceanside luxury. with rich tropical grounds. Professional on-site wedding planner takes care of details. For those seeking a very classy Destination Wedding or honeymoon site, the Grand Hyatt is the perfect choice. Ceremonies are conducted on the Regency Club Lawn with lush tropical foliage and ocean views. Best Aspects: Professional wedding planners, wedding packages, gorgeous grounds with waterfalls and terrific views of coastline, Luau. Issues and limitations: Cost, not for the limited budget crowd, no chairs or cabanas on the beach itself.

Hanalei Colony -- Truly a Hidden Gem for a Destination Wedding with an atmosphere of serenity. Choice wedding venues including beach. Most rooms are newly renovated with wood floors and great furnishings. Ocean rooms have breathtaking views, only feet from water. Beach meals and romantic cabanas. Great spa. The Mediterranean Restaurant may be one of Island's finest. The 7 night Wedding and Honeymoon package in ocean premium condo, massage, ceremony, and car is priced around $4,000. Best Aspects: Location, value-priced wedding services and rooms; professional wedding planner, spa, fantastic restaurant, serene ambiance, just 5 minutes from famous ke'ee beach, and premium condos are 10 feet from sand. Issues and limitations: Older exterior, some rooms are not renovated

Whalers Cove -- A much hidden treasure for small weddings and honeymoons can be found in Poipu at Whalers Cove. Great for small weddings and honeymoons in Poipu. Located in secluded area overlooking magnificent ocean bay views. Whales are common. Nice secluded beach onsite and Poipu Beach is just a mile from resort. Wedding parties up to 15 within great ambiance views. Rooms are nicely decorated and spacious with private lanais and many amenities. Ocean suites are available. Best Aspects: Spacious condos have great lanais and views; small, tranquil and intimate; close to beaches and snorkeling. Issues: Limited availability due to size and condo ownership. No A/C units.

Sheraton Kauai -- Gorgeous coastline views, lovely tropical grounds ideally close to Poipu Beach and local shopping in Koloa. One of best destination wedding programs we saw with a good choice of packages. Sites available for weddings and receptions can accommodate large wedding parties. Ocean Point Location offers spectacular views and gorgeous tropical flowers. Basic Garden Rooms are nicely attired ($355-$370). Ocean suites better for couple. Best Aspects: ocean suites: professional wedding planner, beautiful tropical gardens, pools, site beach access,: Poipu Beach safe swimming and snorkeling is short walk: Point lounge has great views. Issues: Spa needs upgrading, food OK, but could be better.

Hanalei Bay Resort -- Lush tropical grounds . Views Bali Hai Mountain are stunning. Outside garden weddings available with beautiful ceremony and reception backgrounds. Beach weddings available. Best Aspects: On-site special event coordinator, location at Puu Poa Beach with stunning views of Coast, beautiful tropical gardens, waterfalls, paths, pools, beach access, great tennis resort with 9 courts. Issues: Mobility impaired obstacles; staff courtesy vehicles are available. Steep slope to shared public beach area with the Princeville Resort.

Honeymooners Review Guide noted for its Honeymoon advice launched the Choice Awards Program in March with this first stop in Kauai, Hawaii. The Hotels and Resorts have been reviewed and the results are pending with an announcement expected sometime in late May.
