Trebor Lloyd, a veteran of New York law firms and owner of a small independent record label, has seen the importance of the law of copyright, trademark and the right of publicity in a world which has become increasing media-driven and has soared off into cyberspace. Lloyd has worked with very large clients as an associate at some of New York's finest firms but has always taken a special interest in what the large firms would regard as "small fry"--varied persons and entities ranging from rock bands to artists to writers to photographers to small media related businesses, particularly those businesses that are internet-based. Lloyd has particularly noticed the lack of "plain- English" information on those topics of law available to lay persons-- some of whom have vital interests directly affected by areas such as copyright and trademark.
"What I think struck me most when I spoke to lay persons, and very intelligent lay persons at that, were the many basic misunderstandings, misconceptions and 'urban myths' about the basics of copyright and trademark law and such related fields as the right of publicity and unfair competition. I thought it might be a useful service to provide a place where a lay person could pick up a very basic background in copyright and trademark concepts--and get it all in easily digestible chunks over a period of time," says Lloyd.
Thus was born Trebor's Bite-Sized Bits, a free blog that provides a very simple background on issues in these areas of law and then intends to build on that basic understanding, using it as a base to eventually explore new developments of interest to artists, musicians, photographers, small media businesses and others who might find some grounding in the law useful. Lloyd emphasizes that the blog does NOT constitute legal advice and that one should always consult an attorney as to specific legal issues that may arise in copyright, trademark and any other area of law, but he hopes that having some knowledge may at least lead the lay person "to ask the right questions at the right time."
"So far," says Lloyd, "the blog has been quite interactive and at the very least has gotten people thinking about issues that they might very well encounter in life and business. And these people are smart--they really get the concepts quickly. Believe it or not, we have fun too... these areas of law are can be quite intriguing!"
