Giants to Transport Goods and Athletic Equipment for the 111th Annual Race

Boston's Best Moving Company

Gentle Giant Moving Company, the premier residential mover in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Virginia, today announced that it will act as the official mover of the Boston Marathon for the ninth consecutive year. Taking place on Monday, April 16, the 111th Boston Marathon requires transportation and storage of supplies, food and beverage, signage, and athletic equipment. Gentle Giant will take on its traditional pre-race and marathon day role of planning and managing these logistics.

The scope of Gentle Giant's work with the Marathon includes:

  • Delivery of more than 100,000 lbs. (14+ truckloads) of Marathon goods and equipment
  • Set-up along side Marathon volunteers beginning at 5:00 am on race day
  • Transportation of elite race wheelchairs to the starting line in Hopkington
  • Driving the famous purple trucks hundreds of miles with Boston Marathon supplies
  • Delivery of thousands of pounds of food and water to the Boylston Street finish line

"The marathon is something we look forward to working on every year. Our employees really enjoy interacting with the public and athletes from all over the world, despite the fact that it means a 15-hour work day for our movers," said Gentle Giant's Vice President and General Manager John Pacocha, who acts as the project manager each year. "We spend about 350 man-hours on the Marathon every year, so we have to keep a pretty tight schedule. We enjoy being part of the great tradition of Marathon Day."

Gentle Giant Founder and President Larry O'Toole commented, "It's an honor for us to be involved in the Boston Marathon because it's a long-standing tradition for Boston, and it's become a tradition for us as well." In addition to the moving labor provided by Giants for the marathon, the company traditionally has between eight and 15 employees who run in the event. This year, 11 Giants will be out on the course, collectively running over 288 miles. O'Toole continued, "The marathon is a natural fit for our company. We have a highly athletic culture and are known for our 'box run' - running with the moving boxes on a job, whenever it is safe to do so."
