With close to 2800 exhibitors at the International Pool & Spa/Outdoor LIving Expo, Skamper was honored to be chosen as one of the approximately 80 products showcased during the hour-long special.
Skamper-Ramp, which recently received the American Pet Association's "Seal of Approval," is a patented water escape ramp that prevents animals from drowning by providing a way for them to exit pools and walled ponds on their own. The larger size Skamper-Ramp Big Dog™ (for pets over 45 lbs) can also be used in conjunction with boats and docks.
According to Jay Waddell, managing partner of Skamper Industries, "Skamper-Ramp gives pet owners and animal lovers a means of safeguarding against unnecessary pet-panic in the water or death due to drowning. It gives them with peace-of-mind since the ramp allows animals to safely exit the water on their own, without any assistance."
Water can be hazardous to pets and because they are often considered important family members they require the same protection as young children. Carrie Agnew, a partner of and marketing director for the company states that "according to the American Pet Association, the odds of a pet drowning in the United States each year are 1 out of every 1,027." Currently there are over 183 million pet dogs, cats and small animals in the U.S, over half of which have owners with a pool and/or spa, per the APPMA. That translates to an extremely large number of pets that will potentially be lost to drowning. Agnew goes on to say "the reason for this is primarily that most pet owners are unaware of the danger water can pose and the steps they can take to prevent their pet(s) from drowning (http://www.skamper-ramp.com/pool-perils). Skamper-Ramp offers a unique solution in that it works day or night 24/7, not only for any dog, cat or small animal but also "wild" creatures like frogs, possums, squirrels, etc."
The ramps are constructed entirely of box-corrugated, heavy duty plastic (polypropylene), giving them an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio. Polypropylene is extremely durable, robust and chemical- and UV-resistant as well as cost-effective. The ramp works in part because it is white -- the one color all living things can see and angles down into the water, placing it at their eye level (http://www.skamper-ramp.com/info).
Because Skamper Industries is devoted to pet safety and specifically pet water safety in pools, it is a member of the APPMA (American Pet Products Manufacturers Association), PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), APSP (Association of Pool and Spa Professionals) and an IPG (Independent Pool Group-Canada) product associate.
In addition to receiving the APA "Seal of Approval," Skamper-Ramp has twice been honored as one of the "Top 50 Readers Choice Products" by Pool & Spa Magazine readers (2004 and 2006) and was selected as one of the "10 Lowcountry Innovators" by the Charleston Regional Business Journal in 2005.
The ramp is endorsed by veterinarians, humane societies and animal rescue organizations across North America and has been featured on a number of national television programs, including Good Morning America, The Early Show and Animal Planet. It was one of only 11 products chosen to be included in the nationally syndicated Animal Radio show segment recorded during the SuperZoo pet show in Las Vegas last September.
