We sold our house and car and shipped our furniture to the chateau. We do keep a permanent address back home in Texas, but don't have any plans for returning other than to see our family and friends several times a year. We are free to leave when the owner is here, so it works out really well as far as schedules are concerned.

San Antonio, Texas retirees Mark and Sandi Lane are choosing to house sit in France instead of wiling away their free time sitting at home in the United States. "We are now ensconced in an open-ended (years) agreement to housesit a chateau in Normandy"
A travel article in AARP magazine which featured retirees who house sit prompted the couple to start living their dream life. Sandi Lane explains, "My husband and I have traveled a lot over the 20 years we have been married. We have spent many months in France with the dream of one day settling there. The magazine article which got us into house sitting had beautiful photos of a wonderful old stone house in southern France. All the house sitter had to do was walk a dog a couple of times a day. We both said, "We could do that!" We checked out the three house sitting sites listed at the end of the article. housecarers.com house sitting was by far the best of the three. It found us our present idyllic housesit in Normandy, France."
Mark and Sandi Lane are thrilled with their present sit and are considering staying on at their present sit in France indefinitely. Sandi Lane explains, "We are presently ensconced in a 15th century stone gatehouse, house sitting for an absentee landlord. I should say chateau sitting because the property includes the old chateau, two gatehouses, two lakes and numerous outbuildings. We supervise a gardener/handyman and make sure the property doesn't burn down or get robbed. There are no pets to care for other than our own cat. Our only expenses are our own utilities. We are about a two hour train ride from Paris and we are near a village that has three great bakeries. We are meeting many new friends, both French and British. And the best thing about it, other than the kind and generous owner, is that this could last for many years."
When asked whether they were in a hurry to get back to the United States, Sandi Lane was quick to reply, "We sold our house and car and shipped our furniture to the chateau. We do keep a permanent address back home in Texas, but don't have any plans for returning other than to see our family and friends several times a year. We are free to leave when the owner is here, so it works out really well as far as schedules are concerned."
The hardest part for the retired Texas couple was dealing with the reactions of their family and friends to their new lifestyle. Sandi Lane says, "Our friends were stunned, calling us brave. Our families, parents in particular, were a little less than enthusiastic. But we asked ourselves when we would ever have such a perfect opportunity? We had to admit that perhaps it would be never! We are retired, so it's not like we have decades and decades ahead of us. We thank our lucky stars daily for the opportunity that has come our way through HouseCarers!"
