Founded in 1971, Alternatives is a not-for-profit youth and family service agency that provides interactive programs through which young people can acquire new skills, improve academic performance and develop leadership capacity. Alternatives offers comprehensive programs that draw youth away from destructive lifestyles and toward enriching, positive programs, reaching youth in northeast Chicago, including the Uptown, Lakeview, Rogers Park and Edgewater communities.
Speaking on the launch of the new site design, Mr. Fabian Newman, Resource Development Director of Alternatives Inc. added, "Our mission is to facilitate personal development, strengthen family relationships and enhance the community well being. Our programs and services use an asset-based model that focuses on enriching a youth's life by building upon individual strengths within the context of their family and community. Alternatives currently serves Chicago's multi-ethnic northeast side and the participants reflect the community's rich diversity: 40% Latino, 37% African American, 10% Caucasian, 8% Asian, and 4% bi-racial/multi-ethnic and Middle Eastern. Two-thirds live in low-income households; one-third live in single-parent homes.
Alternatives provides services for youth and families both from its Sheridan Road facility, as well as at many community sites, in partnership with several schools and other not-for-profit organizations. Offered at little or no charge, in Spanish and English, Alternatives programs and services address leadership development, academic enrichment, counseling, and prevention of violence and substance abuse. Alternatives Inc. serves 3,000 youth and families each year.
Talking about the new look of Alternatives website, Mr. Newman said, "Alternatives Inc. has been redesigned to form a site that provides online visitors with dramatic improvements in navigation, uniformity and appearance. With eye-catching images of the youth and communities we serve, the new website introduces visitors to the Alternatives community. The online visitor has immediate access to the web site's major topic areas that allow browsing and searching through information about dynamic, youth-led programming, community enhancing projects and services, upcoming events, and counseling and family services."
The new site design provides a much superior user experience and the enhancements include an Improved Navigation, Improved look and feel and addition of new features to the site like print-friendly versions of the web pages, news and events notices, a drop-down box providing direct access to web pages, a site index, and a FAQ page.
