According to the Travel Industry of America, 14 percent of all U.S. adults (29.1 million) say they have traveled with a pet on a trip of 50 miles or more in the past three years. Basin Harbor Resort on the shores of Lake Champlain has a long history of welcoming guests with their four legged family friends. This year, Basin Harbor's pet-friendly package will send guests home with countless great memories and a watercolor of their pet.

The "Dog Lovers Getaway" package is available for the spring 2007 season. Rates start at $684 for the spring season and $770 for the fall for the two-night package and are based on double occupancy with one canine. The package includes a two-night stay in one of Basin Harbor's charming cottages, breakfast daily, and a watercolor portrait of guests' pets by renowned pet artist Sean Callahan (http://www.callahanwatercolors.com).

Guests are invited to send a photograph of their pet in advance of their trip, from which Sean completes a study. The painting will be waiting upon your arrival, matted and ready to frame. Additionally each pet will receive a doggie bag complete with cookies, recipe (should someone care to bake them once you get home), a Basin Harbor dog toy and a brochure outlining the "what's and where's" of animal guidelines at the resort.

Mutt Mitts are also included for owner convenience and Basin Harbor has also installed Mutt Mitt Stations with special receptacles for disposal located around the property. Guests can also opt to purchase the Basin Harbor "VIP" Canine Amenity Kit for an additional $95 and includes a BHC logoed dog bed, custom collar and leash. And for the cat fanciers, Basin Harbor also offers a VIF (Very Important Feline) kit.

"Pets are beloved members of our household, so it is only natural that guests' pets should be part of our family resort. Actually, pets have numbered among our guests from the founding days of the resort in 1886," states Pennie Beach, Fourth Generation Host of Basin Harbor Club. "While dogs comprise most of our pet guests, we have also welcomed cats, gerbils and birds." Basin Harbor Club has been a pet-friendly resort for years and has seen an increase in pet guests particularly in the past five years.

The resort is located on 700 acres, is ideal for animals to be exercised in surroundings pleasant for both pet and owner. And the resort's individual cottages are perfect for everyone to be comfortable and considerate of others.

Pet travel has become a booming industry with dedicated web sites, special pet travel guidebooks and numerous newspaper and magazine articles about the subject available. Additionally, entire lines of pet travel products are available to make traveling more comfortable for the pooch and more convenient for the owners. From pet car seat belt/restraint systems and harnesses, to all in one rolling carrier, backpack, car seat and pet bed/travel kennel -- and don't forget ready to feed travel pet meals -- it's all out there for the pet owner who knows that a family vacation just isn't complete without every member of the family.

Basin Harbor Club was established in 1886 by Ardelia Beach and has remained family owned for 120 years. Today, guests are greeted by fourth generation hosts, Pennie Beach and Robert H. Beach, Jr. Originally a 225-acre working farm catering to summer boarders, the resort has expanded to cover 700 acres of Vermont's most pristine land along the shores of Lake Champlain, encompassing the main lodge, cottages, a private golf course, spectacular gardens and a 3,200 foot grass airstrip.
