Medical coding given stronger backing from Washington.

The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), the nation's leading credentialing organization for professional medical coders, announced today that it has hired Bill Finerfrock, lobbyist and vice president of Health Policy at Capitol Associates, Inc. (CAI), to assist with forwarding the AAPC's agenda in Washington, D.C.

"Bill has the right combination of legislative experience on the Hill, policy knowledge and lobby expertise, having represented the healthcare industry to senior government officials," said Sheri Bernard, vice president of member relations. "We are confident Bill will help provide for AAPC members a strong voice on the important issues impacting the medical coding industry."

Finerfrock brings to AAPC years of combined experience in all facets of the U.S. political process and has an excellent reputation with both Congress, HHS and the DOD. With decades of senior level experience formulating public policy and legislative strategy, Finerfrock offers unparalleled access to Washington decision-makers, said AAPC President and CEO Reed Pew.

"I think there is a tremendous opportunity for the American Academy of Professional Coders and its members to be a strong voice in health policy matters," said Finerfrock. "Professional coders have a unique perspective and body of knowledge that can provide invaluable insight into the behind-the-scenes work in the health care delivery system. Whether it is educating officials at CMS, Congress or other federal agencies about the important role of professional coders or commenting on rules and legislation that could affect medical coding, coders have a great story to tell and we look forward to assisting AAPC in telling that story."

Capitol Associates, Inc. (CAI) is a bipartisan, lobbying, government relations and public affairs firm that serves a broad range of clients including corporations, professional and trade associations, non-profit organizations, foundations, academic institutions and private philanthropic interest.

Finerfrock has been with Capitol Associates since 1993 representing a variety of health interests including health professionals, billing companies, primary care clinics in rural underserved areas, pharmaceutical companies, managed care companies and hospitals. Prior to Capitol Associates, he was director of federal affairs for the American Academy of Physician Assistants and began his career in Washington working for two U.S. senators between 1977 and 1984.

Working with Finerfrock on AAPC issues is David Connolly, a lawyer and former congressional staffer. Prior to joining CAI, David worked for Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) the current minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. David is a veteran of more than 20 years experience in Washington, D.C. policy-making.
