Analog Devices' Blackfin Processor Enables New X-Digital Satellite Receiver to Deliver Broadcast Audio to US Radio Stations

Power and performance of Blackfin’s digital signal processing enables manufacturer of broadcast transmission systems to offer professional-grade device at a consumer price.

Norwood, MA (PRWEB) April 23, 2007 -- Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI), a leading global manufacturer of high-performance integrated circuits used in analog and digital signal processing, today announced that X-Digital Systems, Inc. is using ADI’s Blackfin® processor in its new XDS-PRO4 low-cost satellite receiver that allows satellite operators to distribute broadcast grade audio content to US radio stations. X-Digital’s satellite receiver converts digital satellite signals to baseband audio signals used by radio broadcasters. XDS is currently deploying the XDS-PRO4 in major US radio markets.

X-Digital’s XDS-PRO4 satellite receiver converts streaming digital audio to analog baseband audio using the ADSP-BF537 Blackfin processor as a high-density MPEG 1 Layer 2 Audio decoder. The Blackfin processor handles eight MPEG 1 Layer 2 Audio streams.

With the XDS-PRO4 satellite receiver, X-Digital is taking aim at the low-cost professional audio market. Such a high-performance application requires flexible yet cost effective digital signal processing functionality
The XDS-PRO4 satellite receiver also uses Analog Devices’ high-performance analog technology. ADI’s ADAU1328 is an octal 24-bit, 192KSPS audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that enables the transmission of audio channels to the stations broadcast operations systems. Also designed into the XDS-PRO4 are ADI’s ADT7476A for system monitoring and fan control, the ADT75A digital temperature sensor for thermal monitoring, the SSM2142 for balanced line driving, the AD5601 nanoDAC® digital-to-analog converter for gain control and the OP275 Audio Operational Amplifier to maintain accuracy and reduce noise throughout the signal chain.

"With the XDS-PRO4 satellite receiver, X-Digital is taking aim at the low-cost professional audio market. Such a high-performance application requires flexible yet cost effective digital signal processing functionality,” said Laurence Fish, CTO, X-Digital Systems, Inc. “Analog Devices’ Blackfin has helped us bring to market a satellite receiver that makes it possible to deliver professional-grade features at a price typically seen on consumer products.”

“The Blackfin processor is at the center of delivering high-quality audio and video to a rapidly evolving marketplace. We are proud to be working with innovative companies like X-Digital to develop new products that have the potential to greatly expand our audience of consumers,” said Jerry McGuire, vice president, General Purpose DSP Group, Analog Devices, Inc.

A Convergent Future Demands Blackfin-Class Processing
Analog Devices’ Blackfin embodies a new breed of 16/32-bit embedded processor with the industry’s highest performance and power efficiency for applications where a convergence of capabilities -- multi-format audio, video, voice and image processing; multi-mode baseband and packet processing; and real-time security and control processing -- are critical. It is this powerful combination of software flexibility and scalability that has gained Blackfin widespread adoption in convergent applications such as digital home entertainment, networked and streaming media, automotive telematics and infotainment, and digital radio and mobile TV.

Because developers today seek to reduce time to market by choosing a robust ecosystem that brings them nearer to the capabilities of their end-products, Analog Devices provides an industry-leading tools, starter kits and support including the familiar ADI CROSSCORE® software and hardware tools that support other Blackfin Processors. These include the award-winning VisualDSP++® integrated development and debug environment (IDDE), emulators, and EZ-KIT Lite® evaluation hardware.
