To succeed in manufacturing or service industries, businesses are turning to statistical process control to measure, monitor and adjust performance.

Businesses can't wait until they've produced a big batch of bad product or missed a key delivery date, they need to be able to detect changes and correct them quickly.

While the XmR (Individuals) chart is excellent for normal (bell shaped) data, it can be very sensitive to non-normal data. Douglas Montgomery, author of the Introduction to Statistical Process Control calls the EWMA an "almost a perfectly nonparametric (distribution-free) procedure" for monitoring process performance.

In addition to the EWMA, the QI Macros also includes the following SPC charts: Box and Whisker, Cusum, Moving Average, XmR (Individuals), XbarR, XbarS, XMedianR and XmRTrend. It also includes histograms for analyzing process capability.

The QI Macros SPC software is an addin package for Microsoft Excel that simplifies the creation of Lean Six Sigma improvement stories--the charts, graphs and documentation--Greenbelts and nobelts.

Lean helps employees cut turnaround times by up to 95%. While most Lean improvement projects can be handled with a few sticky notes, Six Sigma requires more analysis.

Six Sigma helps employees eliminate mistakes and reduce subtle differences in a product or service that can stealthily consume up to 40% of a company's total expenses. But Six Sigma requires detailed statistical analysis of the number of defects and the deviation from a specified target. This kind of analysis is hard to do by hand, but easy to do with the right software.
