Dallas-Ft Worth (PRWEB) April 27, 2007 -- Multi-Cultural Media and Entertainment executive, Jacob R. Miles III releases comments regarding the Don Imus firing, Hip Hop Summits and responses being aired on radio and television talk shows.
Don Imus firing for his racial slur directed at the Rutgers women's basketball team, is being discussed in high power summits, boardrooms, blogs, radio and TV shows.
Oprah Winfrey, Russell Simmons, Time Warner, Universal Music, Motown, Al Sharpton, NBC, CBS, FOX and others in family rooms, offices and kitchens across America are talking about this in the context of societal impact, free speech, social and artistic expression.
"The problem is not going to be solved by high powered meetings, though I applaud and support the very needed discussions of this very important topic 'race based & inspired verbal abuse' whether it is Don Imus or a millionaire hip hop artist or a struggling Gangsta rapper ... if your words are race based and abusive it will have a negative impact on society as a whole."
The most impactful group is children and young adults, like the women's Rutgers basketball team and all the younger kids who tell me at elementary and high schools that they want to be a rapper.
There are a lot of positive things being done by Hip Hop artists everyday. This is increasing dramatically; In my opinion, the fact is that the derogatory comments about women in Hip Hop songs have decreased over the last several years ... playful sex, cars, drugs and lifestyle are taking the lead in lyrics. I applaud and congratulate the leading Hip Hop artists as they continue their movement away from denigrating women.
This problem will be resolved by consumers voting their displeasure with their dollars.
Women make or influence over 80% of the purchases in America. The true benefit of the summits and appearances on Oprah will be the coming together of women, black, white and Hispanic to reject this verbal abuse by:
Telling the men in their lives, husbands, brothers, uncles, children turn that off around me and my children.
Stop buying music with lyrics that are derogatory to women. (Whether you think they are talking about you or not)
The bottom line women must raise their voice and close their purse to verbal abuse, whether its coming from Gangsta rappers or TV/Radio personalities.
If it does not sell the record labels will not sell it, the sponsors will not support it and the artist will use their creativity in other ways. Hip Hop is Bigger and Better than race based verbal abuse.
Support Positive Hip Hop!
