You are a publisher in the online or offline media. Your content always contains images. Some of the images available for your use have distracting backgrounds and some have backgrounds that are inappropriate (like your new car model photographed in Times Square, but with hookers walking by behind it). Clearly what you have to do is remove the background and replace it with a different one (like Yellowstone National Park scenery) or not have a background at all.

Having no background is an important prerequisite for images used in catalogs or in product pages on web sites.

The trouble is, removing backgrounds is generally not an automated process. Existing software tools do a good job of removing the bulk of the background but always fall short regarding tiny spots (i.e., pixels) adjacent to the edge of the final object. These pixels have to be removed by hand by skilled graphics technicians. This is an extremely laborious, painstaking job. A new background can be slipped if required with little effort.

Graphics technicians can bill as much as $35 an hour in the Western hemisphere. However, as in the case of many other technical areas, these technicians also exist in lower cost economies such as India. The pitfall is that these technicians have to be supervised by graphics editors with an eye for quality and aesthetics. In addition, the project must be spearheaded by a manager who expertly communicates with the Western client.
