Joyent Announces Slingshot Public Release - Combining Online and Offline Rails Application Development

Obliterates The Distinction Between The Web And The Desktop For Developers

Marin County, Calif. (PRWEB) May 1, 2007 -- Joyent, Inc, today announced the public release of Slingshot - allowing developers to deploy Ruby on Rails applications that run online and offline with simple and transparent data synchronization. Slingshot fuses the best of both Web and desktop applications - giving developers the ability to rapidly develop, deploy and update, a new hybrid of productivity applications.

"Slingshot ushers in the next generation in Web and desktop application development", said David Young, CEO, Joyent. "By allowing a developer to use their Rails code to create applications that work online and offline, Slingshot opens up a new frontier for application development. I am looking forward to seeing the many ways developers use Slingshot and the community that develops behind this technology."

Slingshot 's framework is lightweight and customizable, with an extensible drag and drop abstraction layer and allows the developer to easily deploy code updates and migrations, no matter how long a user has been offline.

With Joyent Slingshot, developers can:

  • Create a hybrid Web/desktop application
  • Synchronize online and offline data
  • Use the same code for online and offline application(s)
  • Deploy and update your application easily
  • Drag into and out of application

Eric Wagoner, participated in the Slingshot private beta to port his farmers market system into an offline application so the farmers and the market managers can continue to work even while in their booths or in their greenhouses. He adds, "Slingshot is open and flexible enough to allow me to decide as the developer what data gets taken offline and how it can be changed out in the field, making it truly integrated piece of my overall system".

Slingshot is available for Macintosh and Windows.

Joyent is releasing two versions of Slingshot; Slingshot Public Release can be downloaded now at http://developer.joyent.com and this version will be fully open sourced in June 2007. Slingshot Commercial Release will contain additional features and support from Joyent and will also be made available for free to developers that host their Rails application on Joyent Accelerators.
