Finally, a Poetry Collection That is Both Scholarly and Accessible
Octogenarian poet Paul Homer's new book, Impressions From A Curmudgeon, delivers wit and wisdom that only age and experience can provide.
Glencoe, IL (PRWEB) May 6, 2007 -- The poetry in Paul Homer's Impressions From A Curmudgeon is deeply rooted in his experiences as a World War II combat veteran, the extensive time he has spent as a practicing lawyer committed to representation of Chicago's indigent community, and 83 years of clear eyed confrontation with life, love and loss.
At times caustic, comic, even sardonic, Homer's poetry is always insightful. Like Chaucer's travelers, Homer produces a parade of captivating people and events. From his award winning poem detailing a description of an immigrant child's guilt in Amnesty, awarded by the Chautauqua Institute of New York, to his witty take on evangelical prayer, to the transcript of the Trial of Joshua, a/k/a Jesus and the demise of an endangered species (Macanudo's Last Stand), there exists in each one the poet's answers to some compelling questions. For example, how are grandchildren taught to Say Hello, Please or Why Chicago Has No Poet Laureate. His war-related poems--Fairy Tale-1945 and Marseilles Harbor-1945 come immediately to mind--have a staying power rarely found in today's poetry.
As reviewer Ellen Marsh wrote, "None of his offerings suffer from the fashionable and yet depressing style seen in so much of modern poetry and which always seem to keep the hapless reerad at arm's length."
Impressions From A Curmudgeon is a continuation of Paul Homer's career in poetry begun when he was nearly 80 years old with the 2004 publication of his premier collection of poems, Neighborhood Legends and Other Poems.
