Amy Child Marella, owner of the Hidden Garden Floral Studio (http://www.hiddengardenflowers.com) in Los Angeles, designed an eco-friendly wedding for NBC's popular daytime drama, Days of Our Lives (Sami and Lucas' "green" wedding episodes air the week of May 7th).

Amy provided locally grown and environmentally friendly flowers including California roses and potted flowering plants. By using locally grown flowers, the pollution created in transport along with the pesticides used to treat the flowers, were significantly cut down. In keeping with the eco-friendly theme, potted plants used in the ceremony will be transferred to the reception hall and immediately be planted afterwards.

The "Green" episode on Days of Our Lives will address the nation's growing concern for our declining environment. The wedding focuses on everything from pesticide-free flowers to biodegradable wedding favors, and Days of Our Lives also incorporates the "green" theme in the lead characters Samantha "Sami" Brady (Alison Sweeney) and Lucas Roberts' (Bryan Dattilo) nuptials. The show is contributing to the cause by providing viewers with many simple, eco-friendly solutions to help the planet.

"I am so thrilled to be a part of Sami and Lucas' wedding," said Amy Child Marella. "I love planning weddings that are totally unique and it's important to be able to contribute to the importance of environmental awareness."

Debbie Geller of Geller Events, who in the past has turned to Amy for floral advice, contacted her to provide the eco-friendly floral décor and ideas needed for the "green" wedding. Debbie was sought-after for the role of event planner for the soap's wedding scene and knew that Amy would be the right fit for the "eco-friendly" trend emerging in weddings.

Amy Marella suggests using the following methods when planning a "green" wedding:

  • Go with locally grown flowers that save on pollution from transportation and pesticides, which growers use to preserve the flowers' freshness.
  • Make a trip to your local florist and rent glass vases that can later be returned and recycled; plus it's more cost effective than purchasing.
  • Also instead of sprinkling the aisle with real rose petals, opt for fake rose petals, which these days look realistic; plus they won't stain the carpet.
