With its soothing, meditative effect, handspinning (making yarn from raw fiber using a spinning wheel or hand spindle) is a relaxing hobby, and the beautiful yarns one can create are an even better reward! Teach Yourself VISUALLY™ Handspinning (Visual™, an imprint of Wiley; April 2007; $21.99) is a new book which shows readers the basics, beginning with the tools and fibers, and takes them through spinning, plying, making novelty yarns, using exotic fibers, dyeing, and more. Author Judith MacKenzie McCuin, a nationally known master weaver and spinner, takes readers along step-by-step in this easy-to-follow guide. Whether one uses an inexpensive hand spindle or splurges on a spinning wheel, sticks with wool or tries alpaca, cashmere, or cotton, they'll learn how to create fun, original, one-of-a-kind yarns can be knit or weaved into truly unique, handmade, and all-natural creations.

While handspinning is an ancient art, it's rapidly gaining ground with today's young crafters. The unprecedented popularity of knitting and crocheting is spurring great interest in handspinning. Because spinning wheels are expensive, Teach Yourself VISUALLY™ Handspinning begins by teaching readers how to use a hand spindle to make yarn. With today's emphasis on things that are handmade and natural, this brand new book keeps in line with the times.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY™ Handspinning makes it easy for readers to create their own projects. Step-by-step instructions, photos, and concise two-page lessons show the reader:

  •     Which spinning tools to buy
  •     How to choose the right fibers
  •     The best way to ply yarn
  •     How to spin with color

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Handspinning brings the craft into the 21st century and provides clear, detailed instructions for spinning, dyeing, and working with handspun yarns. The yarns of the future are in the readers hands.
