State Recognizes Doe Run for Stellar Safety Performance
Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division and Buick Resource Recycling Division earn honors.
Viburnum, MO (PRWEB) May 11, 2007 --- Representatives from The Doe Run Companys Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) and Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD) recently accepted two state awards for outstanding safety performance in 2006 -- the latest in a long list of safety accolades held by the company.
The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations presented its Best Safety Record awards to southeast Missouri mining, milling, smelting and contracting companies during the 2006 Southeast Missouri Mine Safety Association (SMMSA) awards banquet on April 5 in Farmington, Mo.
Doe Runs BRRD earned the Best Safety Record -- Smelter award, and Fletcher Mine received the Small Surface at an Underground Mine award. In addition, special recognition went to Doe Run's Fletcher and Sweetwater operations for each achieving one full year without a lost-time accident.
The awards recognize SMMSA members for excelling in mine and smelter safety and health. Most recipients of the Best Safety Record award have zero lost-time injuries. Other criteria include the number of reportable hours and injuries.
Safety among our employees is always top of mind," said Bob Roscoe, vice president of mining and general manager for SEMO. Each shift begins with reminders about safety, whether it be on-the-job practices or reminders about ways to keep safe while on the go. Its this mindset that helps us monitor whats happening around us and take steps to prevent future accidents."
SEMOs mines are known as some of the safest underground mines in the world. In fact, The Doe Run Company and its predecessors have won the prestigious Sentinels of Safety award for Underground Metal Mining more than 20 times in the past three decades.
We appreciate the dedication of our employees in efficiently and safely operating our one-of-a-kind facility," added Steve Arnold, general manager for BRRD. Only through their efforts have we been awarded the regions Safe Smelter Award nine times in the last 12 years."
BRRD recovers lead and other materials from discarded products such as lead-acid batteries, lead paint chips, spent ammunition and more. BRRDs state-of-the-art facility processes 350,000 tons of material annually. In 2006 alone, the company processed more than 13.5 million lead-acid batteries -- the nations No. 1 most recycled product. It maintains ISO 14001 certification, and was the first secondary smelter in North America to receive ISO 9002 certification, an international accreditation for quality.
