Maryland Town Improves Application Availability Through Remote, Automatic Systems Management

"The remote visibility and access into our IT environment through the Kaseya solution allows us to proactively monitor availability and performance issues prior to systems going down," said Scott Nicewarner, IT manager for Hagerstown. Prior to deploying the Kaseya solution, Nicewarner and his staff were forced to manually manage each system on the network, requiring travel time between the city's dozen facilities spread out over a five-square mile area. As a result, simple help desk issues took hours to resolve, an unacceptable amount of time given that the IT systems support police, fire, utilities and other vital public services.
Now, through Kaseya's remote software license management, monitoring and patch management modules, the city is able to ensure that workstations are up-to-date, patched correctly and running optimally at all times, allowing civic employees to provide consistent and reliable customer service to Hagerstown residents. Management of the city's 225 workstations and 13 servers is done from a central Web-based console, available to administrators anywhere they have an internet connection. While issues still creep up on occasion, they are typically resolved in minutes, rather than hours or days.
"Kaseya is an absolute lifesaver, allowing us to proactively manage our entire network from our data center in the basement of city hall," Nicewarner said. "If a problem occurs, we simply take control of the system and troubleshoot the issue without leaving the room."
Kaseya's scripting agents also allow administrators to automate repetitive tasks, streamlining the way they manage systems and avoid downtime. For example, earlier this year, Nicewarner was able to strategically deploy the daylight savings patch for Windows XP, ensuring that the patch worked and was rolled out consistently across the entire environment. Auditing is just as easy. Previously it took Nicewarner three weeks to complete the annual inventory report--a document used for future IT planning and budgeting. Now he simply runs a report through the Kaseya solution and is done in less than five minutes.
