Creating a Safe Environment for Homeless Mothers and Children

Local home improvement company and customers help improve facilities at the San Diego Rescue Mission.

According to the United States Department of Justice statistics, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women, more than muggings, stranger rape and car accidents combined. More than 50 percent of all homeless women and children are fleeing domestic violence situations. In hopes of improving the quality of life for these children and their mothers, West Coast Flooring Center will donate 10 percent of their sales' profit from May and June to the San Diego Rescue Mission, or SDRM.

With three locations throughout San Diego County, SDRM assists those men, women and children experiencing homelessness, spousal abuse and other desperate life situations, get back on their feet through a variety of classes and workshops.

There are about 60 children that call SDRM home and although most of them attend nearby schools or on-site daycare, they are confined to the shelter after school, on the weekend and during holiday breaks. The closest park is about a mile away, which is too far for most of the children and mothers to venture to on their own. SDRM is currently raising money to build the children a playground on site, hoping to create a safe and fun play place for the families residing in their care.

In honor of Mother's Day, West Coast Flooring Center employees and customers are joining SDRM's efforts to improve the quality of life for homeless and abused throughout the county. A portion of May and June's sales will go toward building a new playground and safe haven for the mothers and children of SDRM.

"Being a local home improvement company, we feel it is important to remind our staff and customers those who are in dire need of the bare essentials in life," said Edward Kruger, owner of West Coast Flooring Center. "We hope that our donation will provide a proper place for children and their mothers to play and develop healthy social skills and provide a sense of security and hope."
