DETROIT, MI (PRWEB) May 23, 2007 -- Heartland Rehabilitation Outpatient Servicesis hosting a Golf & Racquet Sport Workshop at its Birmingham location on Thursday, May 17, 2007 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The workshop, open to the public, will focus on Pilates-based techniques to teach targeted stretches and core strengthening exercises to help golfers and racquet sport athletes improve their game and prevent injury.
"Every spring, we see golfers and tennis players in our clinic who have under-trained and overplayed," says Allison Nakisher, a Pilates-certified physical therapist at Heartland's Birmingham clinic. "Heartland's Sports Workshop will prep these players for the season, so they will have a stronger game, and won't lose time on the greens or the court because they are injured."
Attendees will be led through a two-hour instructional session, including a Pilates and stretching workout focused on core-strengthening, balance, flexibility and coordination. Mats will be provided, and all attendees will receive an exercise resistance band and workout program guide so they can continue their workouts at home.
Attendance at the workshop, which is led by a Pilates-certified physical therapist, is limited. For more information about attending the Golf and Racquet Sport Workshop, contact Heartland Rehabilitation's Birmingham clinic at 248.594.4269. The fee for the workshop is $50.
Heartland Rehabilitation athletic trainer Sandi Lovas recommends golfers and racquet sport participants follow these tips as they prepare for the upcoming season:
Warm up prior to golfing or playing racquet sports by walking around the putting green or court to prepare muscles to be stretched.
Stretch your muscles to improve flexibility, especially in thighs, hips, calves, shoulders and forearms. Stretching these muscles will combat overuse injuries and muscle strains, and the flexibility will maximize your power and further the distance of the ball.
Cross-train. Improve cardiovascular endurance by cross-training with walking, biking, elliptical machines and other activities. When muscles become fatigued, proper swing mechanics fail -- increasing the chances of injury.
Stand up straight. Postural awareness is key for safe swing mechanics. Poor posture inhibits the musculoskeletal system in golf by limiting the height of your upswing, the follow through of your downswing and can cause poor hip rotation.
Know your limits. If something hurts, stop, take a break and evaluate if your body needs a rest.
