For each new member that joined, GreenDimes pledged to fund the purchase of one bed net. GreenDimes reached its goal of providing 5,000 bed nets in just eleven days.
Did you know that more than 40 percent of the world's population lives in areas where malaria is transmitted? Malaria has spread from Africa, Asia and the Middle East, to Central and South America and even the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, each year, between 350 and 500 million cases of malaria occur worldwide. Of that number, more than one million people die, most of them young children in sub-Saharan Africa. That's more than two deaths per minute or 2,700 deaths a day. What's more, malaria can be easily prevented with materials as simple as mosquito nets.
"This is just one of many projects to come that will show our members that collectively we can make a big difference in this world," says CEO Pankaj Shah. "Other than AIDS, no other disease kills more people in developing countries than malaria.
