(PRWEB) May 18, 2007 -- Then non-profit literary organization PEN USA, in association with WordTheatre, will hold a benefit brunch featuring celebrity performances of excerpts from banned books for PEN USA's FREEDOM TO WRITE programs. Legendary actor, humanitarian and author Kirk Douglas will be there to accept an award for defending the freedom of expression. The exciting lineup of celebrity participants features host Larry Gelbart and Lou Diamond Phillips ("Courage Under Fire"), Oscar® nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo ("House of Sand and Fog"), Evan Handler ("Sex and the City"), Robert Wuhl ("Arli$$"), Gary Dourdan ("CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"), Radha Mitchell ("Finding Neverland"), Catherine Dent ("The Shield") and Sarah Clarke ("24", "Thirteen"). They will be reading from banned works of literature written by Richard Wright, Margaret Atwood, Rudolfo Anaya, Nadine Gordimer, Elif Shafak, Houshang Moradi-Kermani, Leslea Newman and Mark Twain.
WHAT: Fundraising event for PEN USA, a non-profit membership organization of professional writers who work to defend freedom of speech domestically and internationally, to promote the literary arts and to secure the rights of writers in the United States and abroad. Proceeds support the organization's FREEDOM TO WRITE programs. WordTheatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping the love of language and literature alive through the ancient tradition of oral storytelling, and the readings are directed by Cedering Fox.
