Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) May 20, 2007 -- A campaign that aims to plant one million trees across Australia in 70 days begins today.
The campaign is the initiative of new website embrace and is designed to get people to help the environment in easy and practical ways.
By going online and purchasing trees, Australians can easily make a lasting contribution to two of the country's greatest environmental problems - rising greenhouse emissions and dryland salinity.
"All you need to do is go online and purchase a tree," said spokesperson, Dennis Walker. "It's an easy and practical way everybody can help the environment."
Late last year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched a major worldwide tree planting campaign.
Under the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign, people, communities, business and industry, organizations and governments are encouraged to enter tree planting pledges online with the objective of planting at least one billion trees worldwide during 2007.
"We thought this initiative was a good way for Australia to contribute to this worthwhile initiative in a timely manner," says Mr Walker.
Each tree costs $2.50 and the minimum purchase is four. All trees purchased are tax deductible.
embrace have partnered with Elementree, who will plant the trees across Australia. "We are proud to be supporting the team at embrace in this bold and courageous initiative," says Courtney Hayes at Elementree.
"People often assume that the problem of global warming is beyond them, when in fact it's not. This campaign gives every individual the power to make a difference," says Hayes
"Trees are the Earth's lungs and can be the simplest, most effective environmental defense at our disposal. 20 trees (the cost of a tank of fuel) is all it takes to offset the greenhouse emissions produced by the average vehicle for an entire year."
One million trees will offset 250,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas the equivalent of taking approximately 50,000 cars off the road.
The group plan to make the campaign an annual initiative. Visit their website at www.one-embrace.com.au
