Brouse's speech, The Physician Workforce: Trends and Implications for America's Future, examined physician statistics from a variety of sources and discussed projections for future shortages. The physician shortage threatens to have a serious impact on Americans in the next ten to 20 years. Brouse also reported on how Utah compares to national trends in physician demographics and shortage projections, saying the situation locally reflects that of the country as a whole.
Brouse concluded his presentation with information about the "cohorts," or different age groups, of physicians that hospitals are trying to recruit and gave advice about how to attract and retain them. Brouse is an advocate for knowing the motivations of physicians from different age groups. Among doctors over 50, for example, half would prefer to work part time.
He explained the strategic importance of providing flexible work options for physicians, such as those available through locum tenens placements. Flexible work arrangements will increase physicians' job satisfaction and keep them in the pool of active healthcare providers longer.
