Hedge Fund Royalty: Alpha Magazine Ranks the World's Biggest Hedge Funds

JPMorgan receives top honors in Alpha's 2007 Hedge Fund 100 ranking of the world's heftiest hedge funds.

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 25, 2007 -- With a combined $1 trillion in assets under management -- a 39 percent increase over last year's total -- the firms in Alpha's 2007 Hedge Fund 100 ranking of the world's biggest hedge funds have made it clear they're primed for growth. Three firms broke the $30 billion barrier, led by top-ranked JP Morgan Asset Management, which had $33 billion in hedge fund assets as of December 31, 2006. Goldman Sachs Asset Management, last year's top-ranked firm, slipped to No. 2 this year despite having increased its total assets by more than $10 billion to $32.5 billion. Bridgewater Associates, No. 3 with $30.2 billion, likewise dropped a notch despite seeing its assets swell by nearly $10 billion.

Just to make this year's ranking, a firm had to have at least $4.8 billion in hedge fund assets. Most of the firms had substantially more. Thirty-seven had at least $10 billion in assets, including Greenwich, Connecticut-based Fortress Investment Group, which in February became the first U.S. hedge fund to do an initial public offering.

The 2007 ranking is also more internationally diverse than it's ever been, with 23 firms based outside the U.S., compared to 20 in last year's Hedge Fund 100. The biggest non-U.S. firm is London-based Barclays Global Investors, No. 8 with $18.8 billion in assets.

The top ten firms in Alpha's 2007 Hedge Fund 100 ranking are:
