Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) May 28, 2007 -- Experts are saying that this summer is going to be warmer and dryer. Most of the United States is in drought conditions, most likely, due to global warming. Keeping properly hydrated will be a challenge but being informed and some planning could save your life. SurvivalKitsOnline has new products and tips to keep you hydrated and cool this summer. http://www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com
In a severe heat wave it is possible to get dehydrated and overheat, leading to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Both need urgent treatment. The symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, muscle weakness or cramps, pale skin and a high temperature. If this occurs, move somewhere cool and drink plenty of water or fruit juice. If possible, take a lukewarm shower, or sponge down with cold water. Heatstroke can develop if heat exhaustion is left untreated, but it can also occur suddenly and without warning. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, an intense thirst, sleepiness and hot, red and dry skin, a sudden rise in temperature, confusion, aggression, convulsions and loss of consciousness. Heatstroke can result in irreversible damage to the brain the brain, or even death.
The heat can affect anyone, but some people run a greater risk of serious harm. These include: Older people, babies, young children, people with mental health problems, people on certain medication, people with a serious chronic condition, particularly breathing or heart problems, people who already have a high temperature from an infection, people who use alcohol or illicit drugs, people with mobility problems and/or people who are physically active.
Mostly it's a matter of common sense. Listen to the local weather forecast to keep informed about any heat wave that is on the way. Plan ahead to reduce the risk of getting heat exhaustion and/or heatstroke. Carry a survival kit that contains food and water in every auto.
If a heat wave is forecast, try and plan the day in a way that makes it possible to stay out of the heat. If possible, avoid going out in the hottest part of the day (11 a.m. - 3 p.m.) and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. If there is a need to go out, stay in the shade. Wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothes, preferably cotton. If going outside for some time, take plenty of water along.
Try to stay inside, in the coolest rooms, as much as possible. Close the curtains in rooms that get a lot of sun. Keep windows closed while the room is cooler than it is outside. Open the windows when the temperature inside rises, and at night for ventilation. If worried about security, at least open windows on the second floor and above. Take cool showers or baths, and splash several times a day with cold water, particularly on the face and the back of the neck.
One should drink regularly even if not feeling thirsty -- water or fruit juice are best. Survival Kits Online has a new line of filtering water bottles that make any water good enough to drink.
Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee, they make dehydration worse. Try to eat more cold food, particularly salads and fruit, which contain water. Seek advice if there are any concerns. Contact a doctor or pharmacist if worried about health issues during a heat wave, especially if taking medication, or there are any unusual symptoms. Watch for cramps in the arms, legs or stomach, feelings of mild confusion, weakness or problems sleeping. If there are any of these symptoms, rest for several hours, keep cool and drink water or fruit juice. Seek medical advice if they get worse or don't go away. If experiencing any acute symptoms seek medical attention immediately or call 911. If anyone you know is likely to be at risk during a heat wave, help them get the advice and support they need. Older people living on their own should be visited daily to check their wellbeing.
