DISCOVER Announces Winners in First ‘Science in Two Minutes or Less’ Challenge

Physicist and bestselling author Brian Greene selects string theory video winner.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 1, 2007 -- DISCOVER revealed today the winners in its first “Science in Two Minutes or Less” on-line video challenge. The competition, conducted entirely via the Internet, asked participants to produce a video not more than two minutes long, which explains the concept of String Theory. The winning videos can be viewed at www.discovermagazine.com/twominutesorless.

Brian Greene, Columbia University physicist and bestselling author, picked Sandy Chase’s “String Ducky” as the contest’s winner. Mr. Chase is a choreographer and DISCOVER reader who lives in New York City.

“There were a number of high-quality entries that deserve praise, but I was looking for something a little more quirky that still had a core element of the science driving the two-minute video,” said Greene. “I think ‘String Ducky’ in particular, and all the other videos, really show the general public grappling with some forefront ideas and doing an excellent job of communicating the basic idea of string theory, the basic implications, and where it might lead.”

In an on-line poll, www.discovermagazine.com users gave the “Viewer’s Choice” award to “The Problem with Math,” produced by the Watsons, a family of home-schoolers from Montclair, VA. The entry received more than 20 percent of the votes cast.

The two winning entries have been given prominent placement at www.discovermagazine.com/twominutesorless and will be featured in an upcoming issue of DISCOVER magazine. “Science in Two Minutes or Less” is a new www.discovermagazine.com feature aimed at everyday scientists who are asked to produce a short video that clearly and concisely explains an often discussed but rarely understood scientific concept.

“With ‘String Theory in Two Minutes or Less’, we have set the bar high for our readers,” explained DISCOVER CFO Henry Donahue. “Given the difficulty of the task of producing a high quality video that clearly illustrates an arcane point of science, we were thrilled with the large number of entries we received – more than 50 of them. We look forward to our next challenge, which will be announced later this year.”

DISCOVER worked with Internet TV pioneer, Brightcove, to offer readers the ability to easily upload their own video explaining String Theory. Brightcove has partnered with www.discovermagazine.com to power all the video on the recently unveiled magazine website and enable readers and fans to easily put the video on their own blogs and personal websites.
