Hiyaah Power Girls was created to provide young women with the opportunity to be exposed to powerful women and the wisdom that comes with age. The purpose of Hiyaah Power Girls eMentoring Program is to provide early intervention and prevention services through the mentoring relationship for young girls in 8th to 12th grades who are at risk of educational failure, teen pregnancy, truancy and juvenile delinquency. Mentors are provided with the opportunity to connect with girls while managing their hectic schedules. The power of technology has removed the excuse of "not enough time" from the mouths of Hiyaah Power Girls eMentors. Mentors commit to communicating with mentees online two times a week to discuss the student's personal development assignments provided at http://www.HPGirls.org.
The Oprah Winfrey Show has joined the "mentoring movement" with a program--that aired May 31--focusing on mentoring in the African-American community. On the show, Oprah delivered a "call to action" asking adults to step up and become a friend and role model for children in their communities. Viewers can log onto an online database at ESSENCE CARES--powered by MENTOR's National Mentoring Database--to find out about mentoring opportunities in their area. The show will repeat June 29. Hiyaah Power Girls eMentoring Program is recognized by Essence Cares and Mentor's national mentoring database.
