Lupus International Proudly Contributes to the Rheumatology Fellowship Program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles

Lupus International is proud to contribute funds towards CHLA's rheumatology fellowship program. Our hope is to find better ways of treatment for children with lupus, and eventually possibly find a cure.

(PRWEB) June 16, 2007 -- Lupus International proudly contributes funds for the rheumatology fellowship program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles

The Division of Rheumatology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles was among the first in the country to develop a pediatric rheumatology program and has remained a national leader for the diagnosis and care of children with rheumatic and autoimmune disorders for nearly six decades. It is recognized throughout the world for its contributions to the care of children with rheumatic diseases and has trained many national and international pediatric rheumatologists. Since 1965, the Division has trained 25 fellows, including a number of the most prominent pediatric rheumatologists in the country. Lupus International has proudly funded three.

The United States as a whole is experiencing a lack of pediatric rheumatologists. In many parts of the country pediatric rheumatologists still do not exist. Because of the shortage of trained pediatric rheumatologists, 60% of children with rheumatic diseases are seen by adult rheumatologists, which can lead to improper diagnosis and treatment. Reasons for the shortage are multifactorial. In recent years there has been an increased awareness and interest in the subspecialty. However, despite the presence of excellent applicant candidates the inadequate funding for pediatric rheumatology training programs often makes it impossible for training these individuals.

Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship is a program combining clinical training with research experience. The division is known for its vast experience in diagnosing and treating children with a spectrum of autoimmune, inflammatory rheumatic diseases, including lupus. The rheumatology research program is thriving with multiple projects involving new, cutting edge therapies and understanding the genetics of rheumatic illness in childhood. Lupus International is proud to contribute funds for CHLA's rheumatology fellowship program.

Lupus International also sponsors several pediatric support groups. If interested in dates and times these groups meet or how to help please click on the link below...
