One of the most difficult aspects of designing a content management system or a file sharing application is to create the file upload component. But the availability of a new version of Rad Upload means the web developer has to spend less time on it, according to Rad Upload's creators.
The major draw back of a conventional HTML file upload form is that it can only handle one file at a time. HTML forms do not support directory upload either. That means anyone trying to upload a CD full of photographs might have to click the 'browse' button hundreds of times. One of the most attractive benefits of Rad Upload is that any number of files and folders can be selected at once and you don't even need to click on a browse button. Not even once.
With Rad Upload the user can select any number of files and folders, drag them across and drop them on her browser to start the upload. However, if the files chosen contain more data than the webmaster is willing to process, the user will be immediately notified of the fact and the upload abandoned. With traditional upload systems these safety checks are not available. Excess data can only be rejected at the server side. That means with conventional upload forms, the data is posted to the server regardless of it's size. Testing and possible rejection happens only afterwards leading to an utter waste of time and bandwidth.
There are other ways in which the webmaster can make life easier for the user (and for himself) with this software. Specially if her website is an image hosting or photo printing site. Many such sites only want images to be uploaded and Rad Upload can easily be setup to reject anything other than images.
Certain web applications that deal with images need re-size them. the conventional approach is to upload the files first and re-size them on the server. Because images with large dimensions have large sizes, it takes longer to upload them. When Rad Upload is used, the images can be re-sized at the server reducing the bandwidth consumption, upload time and the load on the server's hardware. The other significant bandwidth saving measure is the software's ability to compress files before the upload begins. This can lead to a reduction of upload times by 50-70% (depending on the content).
