As the provider of the UK's lowest cost high value travel insurance, http://www.travelinsuranceweb.com were surprised and disappointed in the article published in The Sunday Times at the end of May entitled "Warning over cheap travel insurance."
The article, warned holiday makers "not to pick the cheapest travel insurance policies because many do not provide an adequate level of cover and may leave travelers stranded abroad." It went on to say that low cost policies are "too cheap to be able to offer sufficient cover."
Rob Thomas, Marketing Manager Travel Insurance Web, said, "To tar all low cost travel insurance providers with the same brush is not just 'lazy journalism', but also misleading to the general public, many of whom, with summer holidays fast approaching, will be considering purchasing travel insurance over the coming weeks."
The article highlighted certain areas of cover such as cash replacement, lost baggage, lost passport and personal liability as areas where low cost providers fail to the provide adequate cover, it also warned against high excess payments. However, Travel Insurance Web's cover offers excellent benefits in all the areas highlighted; with up to £500 cash and documents cover, £250 for a lost passport, £2,000 baggage cover and £2 million personal liability -- all that with a low excess of just £50 (only £20 for cash). The £10m medical, £3,000 cancellation, £25,000 Personal accident and £25,000 legal expenses cover also match or better many of the more expensive polices available on the market.
We do however welcome the comment that "quality benefits" should be emphasised over pricing. We feel it is just as important to describe what's on offer to potential customers as the price involved. Furthermore, we are duty bound by the Financial Services Authority to help people understand what they are buying, before they buy it.
Rob Thomas, Marketing Manager Travel Insurance Web, said, "The article last week does us a disservice by implying that all low cost providers fail to offer sufficient cover. We would encourage customers to check on benefit levels and make up their own minds, rather than automatically going for more expensive products as the article implies. Expensive insurance does not guarantee good cover and customers will certainly not be getting the best deal for themselves if they use this as the benchmark."
