GetResearchSmart LLC Website Turns Corner One Year After Launch

A unique website (www.getresearchsmart.org), now celebrating its one-year anniversary, offers a free, entry-level, self-help resource to the public about participation in human research. Personal alertness is emphasized.

St. Petersburg, Florida (PRWEB) June 11, 2007 -- Bioethique globale, Illuminata Inc. and the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center now join others, such as Johns Hopkins Medicine, in identifying by link the GetResearchSmart LLC self-help website as a useful resource about participation in human research. This unique website (www.getresearchsmart.org), now celebrating its one-year anniversary, offers a free, entry-level, self-help resource to the public about participation in human research. Personal alertness is emphasized.

“Participation in human research is something most people know little about,” says Dr. Clifford C. Scharke, Founder and Managing Member of GetResearchSmart LLC. Dr. Scharke’s resume includes a combined twenty years of service in the Office for Human Research Protections and its predecessor office within the current U.S Department of Health and Human Services. “An opportunity to participate in human research may arise when least expected. How smart the decision is about participation, in part, depends on each person’s understanding of the research and its risks.”

Participation in human research is something most people know little about
Human research varies by type, such as behavioral or clinical trial research. The nature of potential harm can be subtle or more obvious, like physical injury. The degree of risk, in part, relates to the likelihood and level of harm or discomfort expected from the research compared to those ordinarily experienced in daily life, including routine tests.

The aim of GetResearchSmart.org is to provide helpful information to people before and as they make decisions about their participation. The website may also be helpful to enrolled research subjects and to research investigators. Handy tools can be downloaded for more in-depth review and future reference.

Launched in the Spring of 2006, GetResearchSmart.org posts information, tools, and references to better understand the human research environment. In service to ethical research, the website also offers the potential to advance the nature and uniformity of protections from the risk of harm.

Visitors to GetResearchSmart.org are invited to review the website in as much depth as their direct situation warrants. A bookmark and mention to others are desirable. Links to posted materials and/or copying for offline distribution (with credit) or individual use are encouraged. Links and referrals to GetResearchSmart.org are most welcome.

The existence, purpose, and approach of GetResearchSmart.org have been made known to human research ethics professionals, through Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R). Links from or identification by organizations or research institutions to www.getresearchsmart.org, for community outreach and/or professional purposes, also include: Case Western Reserve University, Medical Research Associates of Central New York, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, University of Connecticut Health Center, University of Vermont, and West African Bioethics.

It’s now time to turn the corner and make the website’s existence more widely known to its target audience - the general public.
