NY Theatre Fan Illuminates the Tony Awards with Broadway Bullet Podcast
In less than a year, Broadway Bullet emerges as a leading example of the "citizen" media, talking to Tony Nominees and Winners, including Spring Awakening, while covering the New York Theatre scene.
New York, NY (Billboard Publicity Wire/PRWEB ) June 12, 2007 -- Theatre fan, Michael Gilboe launched Broadway Bullet just last August, sensing that podcasting would be a great way to get the word out on New York productions to theatre fans around the country. In doing so, he has already interviewed more than a dozen Tony nominees and winners; including this Sunday's winners John Gallager Jr, Michael Mayer and Kevin Adams, all involved with the musical Spring Awakening.
"I had a recording studio in Times Square, some experience in podcasting, and a great knowledge of Theatre," said Gilboe, "all those things combined, and it seemed like I would be stupid to not take a shot at this coverage." Gilboe graduated with a BA in theatre from the University of Montana and ran a Children's and Community theatre in his hometown of Great Falls, Montana before coming to New York to pursue a career in writing and producing for pop music.
His background brings experience and passion to the show. When asked about how fans react to his matter-of-fact-approach at interviews, Gilboe responded, "I'm not knocking any of the other great Theatre hosts, but many of them bring to mind the snooty 'Frasier' types, or, shall we say, rather outrageous personalities." Fans of the program have told him that he "discusses theatre like anyone would talk about, say, baseball," and that he makes them feel normal about their obsessive theatre interest.
Gilboe added "I'm pleased how fast the New York theatre community has recognized the value of Broadway Bullet's contribution. I went from a complete outsider, to being recognized as official press and interviewing over two dozen Tony Nominees since the announcements in May." In addition, many musicals have been doing exclusive in-studio performances to promote their shows, and many record labels have been providing exclusive sneak previews of cast albums.
The weekly show is putting out its season finale this Thursday, June 14th. The current lead of the mega-hit, Wicked, Julia Murney, discusses being green and her new solo CD. Adam Epstein, the producer of the Tony-Winning Hairspray, gives a sneak to the Broadway-Bound Cry Baby and Ever After and discusses what went wrong with The Wedding Singer. The finale also includes an interview and exclusive in-studio performance from the Off-Broadway Musical, Sessions, and the debut of Broadway Abridged Live version of Wicked, a "radio play" version of the popular website. The show will return with new weekly episodes on July 19th.
