The inclusion of Bulgaria and Romania in the European Union in 2007 is expected to result in a major boost to tourism for Eastern Europe. Figures from leading online holiday company directline-holidays.co.uk (http://www.directline-holidays.co.uk) indicate that the Balkans region in particular will benefit.

In its lead up to EU membership during 2006, Bulgaria earned a record amount of nearly €1billion from tourism. It is bracing itself for a further 10% rise during 2007 with a total of 5.6 million tourists expected.

As a result directline-holidays.co.uk has recruited travel consultants with specific knowledge of Eastern Europe to deal with Balkans holiday enquiries. The increase, according to directline-holidays.co.uk Sales Manager Alex Pilkington, points to a bright future for tourism in the Balkans. "Eastern Europe tourism in general, particularly in the Balkans, has been gaining popularity. It represents great value-for-money when compared with its western European counterparts."

Tourists are realising Balkans holidays offer the best of both worlds, from sunny beaches to world class ski resorts with some of the lowest prices for package tours. Giving her reasons for the boost in number of Britons choosing Bulgaria for skiing, directline-skiing Product Manager Natasha Akram says, "Bulgaria offers the most affordable winter sports holidays available in mainland Europe today, with Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo the most popular resorts."

Balkans favourite Croatia has grown to rival traditional Western European destinations thanks to its superb coastline and resorts and exceptionally sunny climate. Destinations such as Brac, Dubrovnik and Makarska are increasingly popular due to their variety and affordability. directline-holidays.co.uk offer late summer deals on Croatia holidays from September to October from £230per person.

Budget airlines have also attracted tourism to Eastern Europe with an increased number of flights on offer and competition bringing prices further down.

directline-holidays.co.uk specialises in selling good-value package holidays, flights and hotels.
